DEKALB COUNTY, Ala. (WIAT) — The 14-year-old held in DeKalb County in connection with a Tuesday shooting death made his initial court appearance Friday, according to DeKalb County Sheriff Jimmy Harris.
Harris says District Judge Steve Whitmire listened to Deputy District Attorney Bob Johnson as he presented information about the events surrounding Tuesday’s shooting death of 38-year-old Kelena Annette Hicks.
The teen, whose name is not being released due to his age, was formally charged with murder. Harris says the judge believes there is probable cause to continue detaining the teen. A motion was filed to allow the 14-year-old to be tried as an adult. A report will be prepared for the court to help decide whether or not to try the juvenile as an adult.
The next court date is set for Aug. 1.
