Eating healthy without emptying your wallet

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — The cost of feeding children healthy food is an issue many parents are grappling with each day. The cost of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains can really add up. According to the US Department of Agriculture, the cost of providing healthy meals for a family of four ranges from $131 a week for thrifty shoppers, to $299 a week for the more liberal spenders. Five years ago those prices ranged from $117 to $266.

Many items found at the grocery store are often sold cheaper at other places, like spices. In a blind taste test, most people couldn’t tell between name brand spices and those from a discount store.

Party supplies like balloons and paper plates are cheaper at dollar stores. Batteries are also cheaper in bulk. Another good way to save money is trying to get the items at a warehouse type store.
