BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) – Are finances often times the topic of arguments between you and your spouse? They are for a lot of couples. Financial issues are always listed as one of the most common topics that create contention in relationships, and one of the leading causes of divorce.
However it doesn’t have to be that way says clinical psychologist Dr. Josh Klapow, “one of the biggest problems that couples will get into is either avoid the topic of finances altogether, or create huge full blown arguments. But, there are some simple strategies that you can take to have a difficult conversation about finances, and still stay on the same page as a couple.”
Dr. Klapow offers some advice for couples dealing with financial arguments:
- Create specific actions to see progress: This includes things such as writing out a budget, or, creating a money-saving plan.
- Stay informed, but don’t overdo it: Pick a topic, gather information then, move on .
- Don’t let the rest of your life dwindle away: Pay attention to non-financial topics like your family, friends, and your relationship.
- Pay attention to your stress levels during your discussions: Stress negatively impacts health so, take some moments to calm down if you feel yourself getting upset.
