BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — We are just days away from celebrating the Fourth of July holiday, but often the distractions of an Independence Day party make us forget about food safety.
The USDA has an important reminder for cooks before they get busy on the grill this weekend. One out of six people get sick from E-Coli and other foodborne illnesses every year. Food poisoning is more common during grill season.
With the Fourth of July approaching the government is urging citizens to follow these four steps to safe food preparation.
- Clean the surfaces you are cooking on–your utensils and your hands
- Separate raw meats from the other foods you are cooking
- Cook the meat to the right temperature–use a food thermometer
- Chill the food properly
