Birmingham/Hoover among deadliest cities for pedestrians

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) – A new report issued by “Smart Growth America” highlights a disturbing statistic regarding traffic fatalities in Birmingham and Hoover.

The area ranks as the sixth most deadly area for pedestrians in the country!

The report called “Dangerous by Design 2014” looks at traffic related deaths from 2003 to 2012 and ranks the incidents of deaths per capita.

The information is broken down on the number of deaths per 100-thousand people.

Birmingham and Hoover rank ahead of places like Atlanta, Detroit, and Nashville.

From 2003 to 2012 148 pedestrians have died in our area while walking.
When you expand the numbers to all traffic related deaths the Birmingham/Hoover area finishes last at 51st in the report.
