MOUNTAIN BROOK, Ala. (WIAT) — After dead tree branches and debris piled up on the side of 20th Place South and Williamsburg Way, an anonymous person posted a sign that read “Mayor Bell, why leave this?” People who live in the area say the entire area has become an eyesore in the neighborhood, which won a Birmingham Beautification Board Award.
Dottie Drake has lived on Williamsburg Way for 9 years. She was not happy with the increasing amount of trash right by the entrance of her community.
“The whole street needs attention really,” she explains, “There are limbs hanging down and there are limbs extending into the roadway.”
She says it has become a safety issue whenever she walks her dog because she’s forced to walk onto 20th Place South – a busy street with its proximity to Red Mountain Expressway and the Mountain Brook YMCA.
“I had to get out into the street in order to avoid the limbs,” she says,”Then of course cars came by and they had to avoid, swerve to avoid us.”
WIAT 42 News called Mayor William Bell’s office in the morning to report the mess. Around 2:00pm, a crew from the City of Birmingham showed up on 20th Place South and cleaned it up in 20 minutes.
