HUEYTOWN, Ala. (WIAT) — An early morning wreck in Hueytown kills one and sends another to the hospital. It happened on Allison-Bonnett Memorial Drive near the intersection of Red Farm Road.
Hueytown Police Chief Chuck Hagler says 91 year old Levy Jones of Wylam was killed in the accident.
People at the surrounding businesses say there have been a number of other accidents at the same spot.
The owner of an auto dealership which borders the crash scene says wrecks are the reason he put a metal rail around his lot. George Atkins says even that hasn’t been enough to stop some vehicles from careening into the lot.
“Since we’ve had the rail up we’ve had more than two that went airborne, come on across the railing and hit the vehicles,” said George Atkins of Buy George Auto Sales.
On the other side of the road at Perfection Barbers, worker Jerry Woolen agrees that wrecks are a common occurrence and close calls happen on a daily basis.
“Last year there was a car that was flipped over and she landed in the ditch. It’s literally in the same spot,” said Woolen. “While we’re in the barber shop cutting hair we hear people blowing horns all day, because people just shoot out and try to beat oncoming traffic.”
Chief Hagler says the wreck is still under investigation. According to Hagler, investigators haven’t been able to talk to the other driver at this point. Hagler says very preliminary indications are that the vehicle driven by the other person crossed over and struck the vehicle Levy was driving.
