BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) – A steam plant retired in 2013 by Alabama Power after more than 100 years of service may be redeveloped in coming years.

Alabama Power says the company is examining ways to use the steam plant and how it could be restored and help Birmingham’s continuing efforts to revitalize the city.

“We are, essentially, in the beginning phases of looking at possible reuses for Powell Avenue and what are some of the things it could be used for,” said Alabama Power’s Michael Sznajderman.

The company plans to redevelop the plant into an entertainment and cultural center across from Railroad Park.

Restaurants, entertainment options and a museum could also be used in the area.

“We need to think outside the box with that one,” said Hoover resident Sylvester Johnson. “I think they need to take a survey of different demographics and see what everyone things will be good.”
