BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) – Thousands of church members descended upon Alabama Saturday to lend a helping hand.
More than 800 small groups from Church of the Highlands spread out around the state for a day of service. Throughout the day people in red shirts could been seen throughout the Birmingham-Metro area performing yard work, sprucing up schools, community centers and even handing out free drinks and lunches to strangers.
“It’s not about a project or doing yard work today, but about the people that we’re serving today, the community or the city,” said small group leader Julie McCay.
Serve Day is an annual event for the church but it also conducts service projects on a monthly basis.
Last year, more than 10,000 people performed projects in Birmingham, Auburn, Montgomery, Tuscaloosa and Hunstville.
