Organization looks to help prevent seniors from becoming victims of scams

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — Denny Johnson, the Executive Director of the Office of Senior Citizens Services spoke with WIAT 42 about the need for educating and helping Alabama senior citizens when it comes to scam prevention.

Denny said that seniors are widely taken advantage of all around the state. A big reason for it is that often times they don’t recognize the signs of identifying a possible scam.

Her group, which is what she refers to as one the state’s 13 agencies on aging, are trying to help educate seniors on spotting a scam. Their mission is to provide information to senior citizens on identifying potential abuse and where/who to report it to.

Denny says it is important that you never give your personal information, like social security or Medicare numbers, over the phone. Representatives for those groups would never ask for it that way.
