TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (WIAT) – Police in Tuscaloosa arrested and charged a man believed to be responsible for shooting a 16-year-old boy.
Jalen Burns, 21, is charged with second-degree domestic violence assault. Police say Burns was “handling a firearm in a reckless manor, which allowed the weapon to fire and cause the injury to the victim.”
Tuscaloosa police Sgt. Dale Phillips says the incident happened around 1 p.m. on July 15. Burns’ brother told police the two boys were at their home on Hillcrest School Road when Burns was asked to go get his pistol from his car.
Just minutes later, the brother told police he heard a single gunshot and went outside. Phillips says the 16-year-old victim was lying on the sidewalk. Authorities talked to family members and determined Burns shot the victim in what appears to be an accident.
The 16-year-old was taken to UAB and Children’s of Alabama for treatment.
Burns was booked into the Tuscaloosa County Jail on $10,000 bond.
