Man accused of setting ex-girlfriend on fire arrested

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — On Monday just before 4:00 p.m. authorities arrested 48-year-old Michael Kennedy at a home in the 1000 block of Wilkes Road in Midfield. Kennedy is accused of setting his ex-girlfriend on fire over the weekend.

On July 27, deputies responded to a report of a house fire in the 4400 block of Nellie Anderson Street. They arrived to find a 49-year-old female victim with extensive burns to her head, arms, upper body and legs. She was transported to the hospital and admitted to a burn unit in serious condition.

The investigation revealed that the victim had been in a dating relationship with the suspect, Kennedy for three years. The victim had ended the relationship about a month ago and the suspect left in her 2000 Ford Expedition. Early morning on July 27th he returned to the residence where an argument ensued. The suspect reportedly poured gasoline on the victim and set her on fire. The fire also burned an area of the carpeting in the home.

Michael Kennedy faces charges of Domestic Violence 1st Degree and Attempted Murder.
