Woman set on fire by ex-boyfriend dies

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) – The woman who was burned after her ex-boyfriend doused her with gasoline and set her on fire died early Tuesday morning, according to the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office.

Deborah Diane Prater, 49, had been hospitalized since the attack, which occurred in the early morning hours of July 27.

Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Randy Christian says Prater was found inside a home in the 4400 block of Nellie Anderson Street with extensive burns to her head, arms, upper body and legs.

She was taken to the hospital and admitted to a burn unit in serious condition Sunday. Christian says her condition deteriorated Monday night, and Prater passed away just after midnight Tuesday.

Michael Kennedy, 48, Prater’s ex-boyfriend and the suspect in the case, is being held in the Jefferson County Jail on $250,000 bond.

Christians says detectives will seek a capital murder charge against Kennedy.
