TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (WIAT) – Destiny, or “Desti”, Schaetzle left her home sometime just before 6:00 pm on Sunday evening, and she hasn’t been seen or heard from since. Desti’s family tells us the 13-year-old had become upset at her parents’ suggestion that she work on her multiplication tables.
They think she slipped out the back door of their Northpark Tuscaloosa home, and vanished into the wooded area that surrounds their neighborhood.
According to police and family friends, Desti has run away once already this summer. The big difference, this time, is that family members have always been able to find the girl after a few hours, at most.
Desti left home on Sunday without food, water, or money. Her family believes she was also wearing flip flops. Family friends say Desti is very small and also immature for her age.
They say she has a close relationship with her parents and six siblings. Her mother is also 34 weeks pregnant with a baby girl.
Long-time family friend, Kim Diano, thinks Desti has just been acting out as a middle child and rebellious teenager.
Tuscaloosa Police searched the woods around Schaetzle’s home on Tuesday and Wednesday. They have also had a helicopter in the air, and patrols on Harris Lake.
Investigators have called nearby businesses, and gone door-to-door in the neighborhood, searching for any trace of Desti.
Destiny Schaetzle was last seen wearing a light blue t-shirt, Umbro shorts, and flip flops. She has sandy blonde hair and brown eyes.
