BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — As the schools ready their staff it’s up to parents to ready their students. One thing parents should never overlook is a child’s backpack.
The backpack can get so heavy that it makes kids backs and neck hurt. The weight can also be a liability. Children could fall and injure themselves or another child if they are having difficulty carrying the large load. The Academy of Pediatrics suggests the weight to not exceed 10 to 15% of the child’s weight.
Another issue parents should look out for is the way their child wears the backpack. Pediatric Surgeon Shawn Gilber says the proper way to carry the backpack can sometimes be overlooked. “It has two strap for a reason. You’d like to use both of them so the weight is distributed evenly on not one shoulder or the other.”
