Save on school supplies all weekend

PELHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — The state’s sales tax holiday for back-to-school supplies kicked off at midnight Thursday night and is now in effect.

We stopped by the Wal-Mart in Pelham because both Pelham and Shelby county are participating in the sales tax holiday, so school supplies are completely tax free. Some counties, like Jefferson county, are not participating so only the state or city tax will be slashed at stores in those counties.

Just about everything children need for school: notebooks, pens, pencils, and folders. Even computers, clothes, and shoes, can be purchased tax free Friday through Sunday.

The National Retail Federation predicts most families will spend about $600 or more before the first day of school. That total includes basic school supplies, new clothes, shoes, and electronics like computers.
