Destiny Schaetzle not being returned to family home for a while

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (WIAT) — Destiny Schaetzle, the 13-year-old from Tuscaloosa who was missing for 5 days, will not be moving back in with her parents for the foreseeable future. The decision was made after police met with DHR.

Police Chief Steven Anderson confirmed that Destiny is currently staying with her grandmother. Police say she was found near an old church on Friday; but, they added that she’d been staying at an unnamed friend’s house at least part of the time she’d been gone.

Tuscaloosa Police did not return the 13-year-old to her adoptive parents after they found her. They cited unsafe living conditions and the treatment of Destiny and her older sister.

Mr. and Mrs. Schaetzle declined to comment. Police say both girls remain in the temporary custody of other relatives and friends. No charges have been filed.
