BESSEMER, Ala. (WIAT) – Bessemer police say a 13-year-old was raped and sodomized over the course of three days by five men in late July.
Bessemer police Deputy Chief Mike Roper says the three adults and two juveniles have been charged, and more charges are pending. Lt. D.L. Hunter says the department is treating the case as a human trafficking investigation.
Nineteen-year-olds Derion Jeff Shumpert, Khalil Lamontray Bradley and Sammy Cooper Jr. were arrested for their alleged role in the crimes. Two other juveniles were arrested and charged, and more arrests could be made.
The girl was allegedly raped and sodomized during a three-day period between July 26 through 28, Roper told WIAT 42.
Roper says the girl said she did not know any of the men.
During her time in captivity, the girl was passed around among the five men at different locations.
Roper says the girl escaped the attackers on her own.
Shumpert is charged with second-degree rape. He was taken into custody on July 28 and posted a $25,000 bond. Cooper is charged with first-degree sodomy.
Bradley is charged with second-degree rape. Hunter says two juveniles have been charged in juvenile court and may be charged as adults.
Hunter says several other suspects are being reviewed and more charges are expected soon.
