Woman shot in chest during robbery in Irondale

IRONDALE, Ala. (WIAT) – One woman was shot in the chest during an early-morning robbery after two men followed her and a man who was with her back to their apartment, according to Irondale police. She was taken to UAB Hospital for treatment and underwent surgery. WIAT 42 News will provide an update on her condition when it becomes available.

Irondale police say the incident happened around 2:30 a.m. as a woman and a man stopped at a Roebuck convenience store to buy a drink.

Irondale police Detective Michael Mangina says the two suspects followed the woman and the man back to their home. As they sat inside the car holding a conversation, the suspects went to the passenger side of the car and struck the man in the head with a sawed-off shotgun, Mangina says.

The other suspect moved to the driver’s side of the car and ordered the woman to get out of the vehicle. Mangina says the suspects then tried to take the faceplate off the stereo but were unsuccessful.

The two men fled the scene while firing shots back at the victims, Mangina says. As the woman reached for her hand gun, she was shot in the chest.

Magina says police are looking for two black males in their 20s who are armed with a handgun, a sawed-off shotgun and may be driving a turquoise Grand Marquis.

Anyone with information pertaining to the whereabouts of the two suspects should contact Irondale police at (205) 956-5990.
