Better brushing habits

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — Brushing your teeth is a crucial part of daily hygiene, and for most, it’s a ritual we’ve performed for decades.

New research, however, shows some of the steps we take to keep those pearly whites looking their best may be doing more harm than good, especially if you brush your teeth extremely hard.

Experts say you should brush in a slow, intentional motion, with a soft bristled brush for the best results. You also want to make sure you’re not rushing it. Brushing less than two minutes can leave behind plaque, which can lead to cavities.

So what about the type of brush you use? Dental experts say they’re pretty much all the same, but the pressure from electric brushes tend to keep users from brushing too hard and fast.
