BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) – Investigators with the Birmingham Police Department arrested one of its own officers on drug charges Monday.
Birmingham police spokesman Lt. Sean Edwards says Kenneth Padgett was arrested on Aug. 11 and charged with unlawful possession of marijuana and unlawful possession of a controlled substance.
Edwards says the department received information that Padgett, 28, was involved in “illegal narcotic activity. An internal investigation confirmed the information, which ultimately led to Padgett’s arrest.
“Most of our officers work hard every day and are committed to serving the citizens of this great city. Unfortunately, there are some from time to time that make decisions that totally go against what we stand for as an organization,” Edwards said in a news release. “Chief Roper, for the past six years has personally taught every new academy recruit class on the subject of Ethics. This is a testament to how serious Chief Roper is about officers doing the right thing. Bottom-line, this type of behavior will not be tolerated.”
Edwards says the investigation is ongoing.
