New form of spice seized for first time in Alabama

GADSDEN, Ala. (AP) – Authorities in Alabama say they’ve recovered about $100,000 worth of a designer drug that’s so new the Drug Enforcement Administration is still trying to classify the substance.

Etowah County officials say the drug is a white powder called AB-Pinaca. It’s used to make synthetic drugs called “spice.”

About four pounds of the drug was allegedly shipped from China to a home in Etowah County.

Two people are charged under a state law with possessing the drug and trafficking. But there aren’t any federal charges since the chemical isn’t considered a controlled substance under U.S. law. The DEA recently listed two similar chemicals as being subject to federal drugs laws, however.

Etowah County Sheriff Todd Entrekin says the seizure was the first time AB-Pinaca has been found in Alabama.
