Suspect fires at state troopers during chase

CHILTON COUNTY, Ala. (WIAT) – One person is in custody after leading Alabama State Troopers on a chase and firing shots at the troopers.

Sgt. Steve Jarrett of the Alabama State Troopers says the incident happened Thursday afternoon on Interstate 65 and ended just outside of Chilton County. It began when a trooper attempted to stop a car for speeding at mile marker 184 on I-65 southbound.

Jarrett says the driver refused to stop and a chase ensued. The driver fired shots at the trooper during the case.

The chase eventually made its way to I-65 northbound. Stop strips were deployed and troopers stopped the car at mile marker 195  in Chilton County.

Jarrett says the suspect is in custody and no one was injured in the shooting.

The roadway will be closed while the investigation continues, and Jarrett says troopers will be on the scene “for a while.”
