BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — With football season in full swing many players are practicing hours in full pads. The combination of summer heat and intense practice can be fatal for anyone if the right precautions aren’t taken.
For those who are athletes, or even just spend a large amount of time outside exercising, remember these health guidelines for the heat:
- Drink plenty of fluids. Dehydration is a key factor in heat illness, also mix water in with sports drinks.
- Take breaks in the shade.
- Wear light-colored loose clothing.
- Use sun blockers.
- And if you begin to feel sick, immediately seek medical help.
