One injured after glider crashes in Sylacauga

SYLACAUGA, Ala. (WIAT)- A Chelsea woman escaped with only a minor injury after the glider she was piloting crashed Sunday afternoon.

Sylacauga Police Chief Chris Carden tells WIAT 42 News that a small glider plane went down around 3 p.m. near the Sylacauga Airport.

Carden says the pilot was assisted out of the aircraft by a Sylacauga police officer. Steve Bair with the Central Alabama Soaring Association confirms that the pilot is Rachel McKay of Chelsea who is a member of the group and has been active with them for two to three years.

McKay was participating in one of the club’s weekend flights when the crash happened. The glider plane she was flying belongs to the group.

Bair says McKay was taken to a local hospital to be treated for an injury to the ankle. Officials are still at the airport investigating.
