BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) – A great way to cool off during the hot days of August is to take the Ice Bucket Challenge. It’s also a great way to raise money and awareness for ALS. People across the country, including here in Birmingham are all taking part in the challenge.
UAB professor, Dr. Peter King, has a reason for taking the challenge. He studies ALS and treats patients suffering from the disease. “I’ve taken care of ALS patients for 20 years,” Dr. King says, “and I’ve seen the devastation, particularly affecting someone who’s in the prime of their life and is active and has to lose all those activities. And I’ve also seen the effect on families.”
Since the Ice Bucket Challenge began in July, the ALS association has received more than $30 million in donations.
