BIRMINGHAM,Ala. (WIAT)—Six people were injured, one critically, in an accident that shutdown I-20/59 in Birmingham.
The accident happened around 6 p.m near the Arkadelphia Road exit. A car travelling northbound on I-20/59 clipped a van, causing the van to flip over. Five people were in the van, two adults and three teenage children. All were transported to UAB Hospital and Children’s Hospital One of the adults from the van is in critical condition, according to Lt. Sean Edwards with Birmingham Police.
The driver of the car was also injured and transported to the hospital. The accident is under investigation, and no charges have been filed at this time.
Debris from the accident was scattered across all four lanes of the interstate, prompting the closing of the highway.
