SHELBY, Ala. (WIAT) – Lisa Carden was really excited. She wasn’t only for excited for another day of school. She was excited to hear the words “You’ve just won $1,000 for your school.”
Carden is this week’s recipient of WIAT 42’s One Class At A grant program. Shelby Elementary School is small, with just 170 students. Yet, Carden says its needs are large.
“With such limited funding, this is the only opportunity we have to get enrichment for our classrooms, and our music program is something we felt we needed to develop for our students,” Carden said.
Seventeen years ago, Carden came to Shelby Elementary School after graduating from the University of Montevallo. She’s been at the school ever since, and during that time she’s gone out of her way to make sure the students have the very best resources.
She teaches music at the school and noticed the school didn’t have enough instruments. She won a grant last year, and then she applied for the One Class At a Time grant and won. Her goal this time is to buy a set of guitars and to inspire a love of music.
“Music education is so important. It increases their academic level. It helps their concentration and focus,” Carden explained. “We just wanted our students to be well-rounded in every aspect when they leave Shelby Elementary.”
