Food truck vendors make adjustments to Birmingham ordinance

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) – Many of Birmingham’s food trucks gathered in Railroad Park Sunday for the third annual Trucks by the Tracks event. Twenty of the city’s street vendors offered up their culinary creations for those looking to take in some Magic City street fare.

Many of the food trucks in attendance have had difficulty adjusting to the City of Birmingham’s ordinance that was passed in December of 2013.

Some of the trucks have downtown Birmingham altogether, but most are fighting through the confusion to continue operation.

“We found that Jefferson County, Birmingham is one of the most difficult to operate in, because it is so restrictive in the ordinances that were passed,” said Frank Recipi, the treasurer for the Birmingham Street Food Coalition. “So, we hope that we can kind of work with them, tweak the ordinances and make them good for us.”

Those who continue to operate food trucks in downtown Birmingham say it is a great opportunity to market their brick and mortar restaurants to different parts of the city’s population.
