BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) – The man who shot and killed two people at a Birmingham UPS facility before turning the gun on himself has been identified as Joe Tesney.
Police say Tesney had recently received termination papers. All of the victims are white males, and the two shooting victims have been in supervisory roles, according to Birmingham police.
Birmingham police responded to multiple calls Tuesday morning regarding an active shooter at the UPS Customer Service on Inglenook Lane.
Officers entered the facility and found the three bodies, one of which was the shooter, Tesney.
The congregation of North Park Baptist Church in Trussville, where Tesney called home, is gathering Tuesday night to remember one of their own and the others who lost their lives Tuesday morning.
Neighbors who live near Tesney say their neighborhood is quiet, with most of the homes spaced far apart, making it difficult for neighbors to know each other very well. Regardless, they reacted with shock and sadness upon hearing the news of Tuesday’s shooting.
“I mean, he was out there with his children playing,” Weaver said. “They were all out there laughing and cutting up and working in the yard together.”
Weaver, who has lived in the Argo neighborhood for more than a decade, says the Tesney family has lived in the area for many years.
“They got flowers planted around the cross, so yeah, it was a surprise,” Weaver added.
