BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) – On Wednesday October, 22 2014 new categories for severe weather forecasts are in effect and replaces the former (Slight, Moderate, High) levels. Now five categories will help determine the risk for severe weather (Marginal, Slight, Enhanced, Moderate & High). Marginal means there is a chance for thunderstorms and an isolated severe storm isn’t out of the question. Getting in the higher categories of Moderate and High it means you need to have your severe weather plans in place and to be ready for high winds, hail and tornadoes.
These outlooks will be for 1-3 days out and will be issued by the SPC (Storm Prediction Center) in Norman, Oklahoma.
