Woman arrested on 35-count indictment, accused of financially exploiting veterans

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) – An Alabama woman is accused of financially exploiting military veterans.

Jefferson County sheriff’s officials say 36-year-old Janice Davis of Minor has been arrested on a 35-count indictment.

Sheriff’s officials say a law firm had contacted the Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office after discovering a discrepancy in the firm’s department that deals with guardians.

Authorities say an investigation found that Davis had worked with payments meant to assist individuals who had been deemed unable to oversee their personal financial affairs.

Investigators found that nearly $295,000 was misappropriated from 34 accounts.

Sheriff’s officials say Davis used the money to pay personal bills, including a $66,000 credit card bill and to purchase two Mercedes automobiles.

Davis released from jail Oct. 17 after posting $250,000 bail. It wasn’t known whether she has an attorney.
