WASHINGTON, D.C. (WIAT) – Federal regulators say a defective airbag problem is even bigger than initially thought. Millions of vehicles have already been recalled, and more are already in the works. T
he Takata airbag recall has expanded from 4.7 million vehicles, to nearly 8 million. Ten automakers are affected: BMW, Chrysler, Ford, General Motors, Honda, Mazda, Mitsubishi, Nissan, Subaru and Toyota. The airbags contain a canister filled with propellant. In an accident, the canister explodes and the bag deploys – but in defective bags, pieces of shrapnel can fly out.
The National Highway Transportation Safety Administration says the risk is higher in warm weather states, including Alabama. Regulators believe the problem could be linked to humidity. Click here to see if your vehicle is affected, and how repairs are being planned.
