Restaurant employee fights back, shoots suspect during robbery

BIRMINGHAM,Ala.(WIAT) — Two people were shot at a local restaurant Sunday evening in what investigators are calling an attempted robbery.

According to police, the shooting occurred at the KFC on 20th Street in Ensley around 6:30 p.m. Two suspects entered the restaurant in an attempt to rob it, and began shooting as soon as they entered the store. There were several employees in the restaurant at the time.

A male employee began running to the back of the restaurant pursued by one of the suspects, who began firing at the fleeing employee.

In an attempt to defend himself, the employee grabbed a gun and fired back, hitting the suspect in the abdomen. The employee was also shot, but police say his injuries are not life-threatening. The employee was treated and released.

The injured suspect was dropped off at the hospital by someone police are calling a person of interest. That suspect is in critical condition.

The shooting remains under investigation.
