BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT)–CBSSports.com, and multiple media outlets, are reporting Sunday that UAB will drop its football program this week. CBS Sports later reported that UAB athletic director Brian Mackin will also be fired this week.
The university has not commented on any of the reports, and nothing official has been released.
The reports started surfacing Sunday morning after an ESPN story quoted head football coach Bill Clark saying he believed the “odds are very high it (the football program) ends this week.”
Later Sunday afternoon, Clark sent a comment out via his Twitter page: “Contrary to news, We haven’t heard any decision about our program. We are still fighting!”
UAB Sports Information Director Norm Reilly told WIAT 42 Sports’ Lauren Sisler that he had called Bill Clark this afternoon and said that there is nothing new to report on the status of the UAB football program.
UAB became bowl eligible Saturday with a 45-24 win over Southern Miss.
