Supporters rally to save UAB Football

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — Supporters of the UAB football program showed up in force Sunday evening in an effort to save the program.

Reports started surfacing Sunday morning that the football program would be shut down this week, and that the current athletic director may be also be fired.  Social media lit up with hundreds of posts of support for the program from former athletes, alumni, and those who feel the current Board of Trustees are to blame for the current situation.

Those posts helped get the rally started, with several hundred people protesting the possible elimination of the program. Several members of the football team were on hand, speaking to the crowd.

Many at Sunday night’s rally plan to march on the Administration Building Monday morning to show UAB President Ray Watts that the university and community are behind the football program. A study of the UAB Athletic Department could be released this week.
