CENTER POINT, Ala. (WIAT) – A Birmingham man was arrested Wednesday after a man caught him trying to take a television from his home.
Sgt. Jack Self, a spokesman for the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, says Deontre Johnson, 21, was arrested and charged with second-degree burglary and second-degree theft of property.
Self says authorities received a report of a burglary in progress on Dogwood Lane in Center Point around noon Thursday.
A man told deputies he was inside the home asleep with his infant child when a noise woke up him up. Self says the man found Johnson trying to leave the home with a television. Johnson dropped the television and tried to flee, but the man was able to catch him in the backyard.
After a struggle, the victim was able to keep Johnson until deputies arrived.
Two other suspects were arrested a short while later. Chief Deputy Randy Christian says deputies received a report of a man walking in an apartment complex carrying a television.
Deputies found the man behind a retaining wall, and he attempted to flee. He and the other suspect were taken into custody without incident after they were found hiding in the restroom of a nearby laundromat.
Carlos Mines, 20, and Roderick Mitchell, 18, are charged with third-degree burglary and second-degree theft of property. They’re being held in the Jefferson County Jail on $10,000 bond.
Johnson is being held in the Jefferson County Jail on $15,000 bond.
