Clay model of Sloss sculpture unveiled

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — A new addition is coming to historic Sloss Furnaces in the form of a statue of founder James Withers Sloss. On Wednesday the statue’s sculptor unveiled a clay model.

Artist Andy Davis has recently done sculptures of Ray Charles, Patrick henry, and Hugh Hefner. Davis says Sloss, like the others he has sculptured, was an ordinary man who accomplished extraordinary things. “He had a vision. He had different things he was doing in his life, [he] bought this property, I believe, to be a planter. The soil wasn’t good, [but] they found iron in it so he developed the Sloss Furnaces and it grew an entire city.”

Colonel James Withers Sloss founded Sloss Furnaces in 1880. The finished sculpture will stand 7 feet tall.
