TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (WIAT) — As the University of Alabama aims to add another national football title to its list, the Walk of Champions in front of Bryant Denny Stadium has become the place to go for a photo op.
But Alabama fans aren’t the only ones taking pictures.
Early Wednesday morning, Ohio State fans visited Tuscaloosa to give coach Nick Saban’s bronze statue a makeover, dressing it in Ohio State gear.
Fans also posed with the bronze likeness of Paul “Bear” Bryant, spelling out “O-H-I-O.”
The photos were posted on social media, and have gone viral.
“I was impressed with their creativity, and that the Ohio State fans could spell,” joked Jill Green, an Alabama fan.
“Everybody wants Bear Bryant to be part of their legacy, so I guess this is a way for Ohio State to include the Bear in their legacy,” said Green’s husband, Kevin.
Other Alabama fans, like Tyler Snell, insisted the visitors from Ohio must be envious.
“They just want to be close to the statue,” Snell said.
“Yeah, they’re just jealous,” added Tiffany Wood, another Alabama fan.
Members of the Buckeye nation continued to flock to Tuscaloosa Wednesday to get in on the fun.
“We think (Bear Bryant) is a big closet Ohio State fan, actually,” said Ian Smith, on his way to New Orleans to cheer on the Buckeyes. “So we wanted to make sure he was included in our picture.”
While some Ohio State fans said the pranking was all in good fun, others said there’s a line that should not be crossed.
“Take pictures, have fun, but you don’t have to dress (the statues) up,” said Ron Smith. “I just think it’s disrespectful.”
