A month after UAB’s football program shutdown, supporters continue to rally

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) – It has been almost a full month since the plug was pulled on UAB’s football program, but some fans refuse to accept President Watt’s announcement.

A “FreeUAB” protest is planned for this Sunday on the campus green from 5 pm to 9 pm. Organizers are asking blazer fans to come out and support the cause. They plan on having free food, guest speakers and giveaways.

Supporters are calling on board members to separate UAB from the University of Alabama system.

According to our sister station, WHNT, the protestors are getting an early start on Sunday’s demonstration. Organizers are planning to pack the house, Friday night at UAH’s hockey game.

The Chargers are taking on the Alaska Seawolves at 7 pm. Fans and students are hoping their attendance will be symbolic.

UAH lost its hockey program in 2011. Grassroots efforts helped bring it back a few months later.
