Landmark ruling opens door to same-sex marriage in Mobile

A federal judge in Alabama has ruled in favor of three gay couples’ request to force a probate judge to issue a marriage license in Mobile County.

U.S. District Judge Callie Granade announcing the historic decision after a brief hearing Thursday.

The landmark ruling provides much-needed clarification statewide, as many probate judges in Alabama refused to issue the licenses after state Chief Justice Roy Moore said they didn’t have to.

Moore gave his order even though Granade overturned the state’s ban last month and the U.S. Supreme Court refused to stop gay marriages from beginning Monday.
