BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) – Melanie Gaines knows to maximize what her students learn at Clay-Chalkville High School. She needs to communicate like they do.
“They’re so used to communicating that way, but we want to harness that communication and teach them how to use it effectively and through the tablets we’re able to do that,” said Gaines.
She’s talking about tablets because that’s exactly what she plans to buy now that she’s this week’s winner of a $1000 grant as a part of the One Class at a Time gran program.
While the subject material may be the same — they’re studying rhetorical analysis right now in the class — this is not your mother’s English class at all. WIAT 42 quickly found out that technology is driving everything in this class.
Books are still great, but they don’t feature apps that allow the students to collaborate seamlessly with their teacher.
Now, Gaines can get those tablets and apps that she needs.
The sponsors of One Class at a Time are America’s First Financial, Pepsi, and Zaxby’s. If you’d like to apply for a $1,000 grant for your school, fill out the application here.
