Firefighters battle large house fire in Mountain Brook

MOUNTAIN BROOK, Ala.(WIAT)- Firefighters spent several hours battling a large house fire In Mountain Brook Saturday afternoon.

The fire started at a home in the 2200 block Sterlingwood Drive around 4:30 p.m. Crews from Mountain Brook and Vestavia Hills had to battle the fire for well over an hour.

The fire began on the backside of the house and spread into the attic. Firefighters not only had to battle flames but also high winds in the area.

“The thirty mile per hour wind did not help put the fire out,” Mountain Brook Fire Marshall David Cohen said. “It fanned the flames just like you would in a fireplace if you fanned to make the fire get larger.”

There were no injuries reported at the scene. Two people were inside the home when the fire began but made it out of the house safely.

Crews from Mountain Brook will remain on scene overnight to make sure there aren’t any flareups.

An investigation into the cause of the fire will begin either Sunday or Monday.
