UAB introduces technology to assist in concussion research

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — UAB is bringing in new high powered technology to help their research into concussions. The machine is called the VORLAB and it allows researchers to look at causes of symptoms.

Participants have their eye and balance monitored while undergoing a series of tests and challenges. It’s the only machine of its kind in the state. UAB researchers said they see great potential and are hoping for progress with this new machine.

“What we’re doing here is starting to get towards the why for some of those balance and double vision and other symptoms that are subjectively described by patients who’ve suffered concussions,” said Dr. James Johnston, UAB assistant professor of neurology. “I think this is really, we’re entering that stage where we’re able to study this in a much more detailed manner.”

If you would like to participate in the research study using the VORLAB, call the UAB Concussion Clinic.
