HENDERSONVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) – It was a warm welcome to Hendersonville for Staff Sgt. Joseph James.

With his wife and three children by his side, dozens of neighbors gathered as the national nonprofit organization Operation Finally Home and Nashville home-builder Goodall Homes broke ground on a custom-built, mortgage-free home for the family.

“When you break ground you finally start to see the beginning of the next phase,” James explained to News 2.

The one-level home will have wider doorways and other amenities to accommodate the life James now leads using prosthetics.

“A house like this will not only allow me freedom of movement, but I will be able to do it without any risk for myself,” he said.

James’ life was changed forever on April 8, 2008.

“We were coming back from a mission near Sauder City when we got struck by an EFP. I was the gunner of the vehicle and when it went through it took both my legs off,” he explained.

After undergoing nearly 20 surgeries, he’s learned to walk again.

James has made a tremendous recovery, and Wednesday was another step.

“This is the next chapter of my life and hopefully I can continue to doing more for my community and other veterans’ issues and just continue to give back,” he said.

Construction will begin next week and hopefully the James family will move in September.

Operation Finally Home was established in 2005 as a nonpartisan/nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization. To find out more, visit OperationFinallyHome.org.
