Kayaking accident in Gadsden raises concerns

GADSDEN, Ala. (WIAT) — After two and a half days of tragedy on Big Wills Creek, Gadsden city leaders are looking for was to keep something like this from happening again.

The water may look calm, but it claimed two lives over the weekend. Kayaker Dakota Crandall drowned Saturday morning after being thrown from his boat. Rescue worker Vicky Ryan died trying to save him. Monday afternoon, Gadsden City Councilman Johnny Cannon said they will be putting up signs in the near future to keep boats out of the area.

“The under-current will pull you under there if you’re not careful,” said Cannon. “I advise and beg people, don’t get in right here in this water right here. Don’t get in boats, kayaks, canoes or whatever, be safe don’t be sorry.”

Rescue squad member Vicky Ryan leaves behind a husband and young son. A Go Fund Me account has been created to assist in educational funding for her son.
