BESSEMER,Ala. (WIAT)–Bessemer police are investigating a shooting where the victim was arrested several hours later, charged in connection with her own shooting.
According to Deputy Chief Mike Roper with the Bessemer Police Department, it all started around 12:35 p.m. Sunday afternoon at an apartment complex on Exeter Avenue. When police arrived they found a woman, shot in the thigh. She did not live at the apartment complex according to Roper. The woman, whose name has not been released, was transported to UAB Hospital.
Fast forward about 6 hours later, when police got a tip about a vehicle involved in the earlier shooting. A patrol officer spotted the SUV on Dartmouth Avenue in Bessemer and attempted to stop it. During the short chase, which ended on Avenue K, someone inside the SUV threw a gun out of the vehicle. The officer was able to stop the silver Chevy, taking into custody 6 adults and one juvenile. One of the adults was the woman who had been shot earlier in the day.
All were charged with Discharging a Firearm into an Occupied Dwelling. Investigators believe the shooting involved some type of retaliation, but are still trying to piece together the whole story.
