CULLMAN, Ala. (WIAT) — UPDATE: The Cullman County coroner say 32-year-old Michael George Spano of West Point died on impact Sunday afternoon.
Cullman police say Spano was speeding when he slammed into the back of an 18-wheeler on Highway 157, at the I-65 intersection.
The crash was so violent, police say they could not determine the make and model of the car Spano was driving.
The driver of the truck was not hurt.
ORIGINAL: The victim from the Cullman County accident Sunday evening has been identified as Michael George Spano, 32. Spano is from the West Point Community in Cullman County.
One person is dead after a violent traffic accident in Cullman Sunday evening.
According to Cullman Assistant Police Chief Craig Green, the accident happened about 5:30 p.m. in the southbound lane of Ala. Highway 157 at the intersection of I-65. A 33-year-old man from Cullman was driving a 4-door sedan on AL 157 when he ran into the back of an 18-wheeler at a high rate of speed. The victim, who has not been identified, died at the scene. The driver of the 18-wheeler was not injured.
The accident was so violent, authorities had a hard time identifying the make and model of the car because it was so badly damaged.
The area around the accident was closed for several hours, but the road has now been reopened.
