CALERA, Ala. (WIAT) — UPDATE (X2): The suspects from a Tuesday manhunt in Calera have been identified as 24-year-old Jonah Morriss Allen of Calera and 35-year-old Kendrick Samuel Allen of Calera.
Jonah Allen has been charged with three counts of attempted murder. According to the Calera Police Department, he was recently released from prison on robbery charges.
Kentrick Allen has been charged with reckless driving, attempting to elude the police, obstructing governmental operations, possession of marijuana in the second degree and illegal possession of prescription medication.
UPDATE: A police chase and a manhunt through the woods lands two men behind bars.
It all unfolded along the I-65 corridor just south of Calera, near the Shelby-Chilton county line.
Deputy Chief Clint Barnett says what started as a traffic stop along Highway 31 on the south side of town led to two men being arrested.
Barnett says police tried to pull a car over, but the driver wouldn’t stop. The car turned onto Highway 67 and went for about four miles until it crashed in the woods.
Both men in the car got out and ran, at which point one of the suspects fired a shot at an officer.
While police managed to catch the first man pretty quickly, the second one ran into the woods and into some very rough terrain.
Calera PD called in help from nearby agencies. Police said they even had dogs on the ground and choppers in the air to look for the suspect.
He was finally caught just before 3:00 Tuesday afternoon.
Barnett said there are a lot of unknowns here, including the identities of these suspects and why they ran.
Barnett said once they were caught, the suspects kept giving officers different names — a name that had warrants tied to it. Barnett can’t confirm whether either of these suspects had warrants out for their arrests.
He also cannot confirm whether they had weapons on them at the time of the chase.
He says investigators are still gathering information, and that he will be updating us as this story develops.
WIAT 42 will continue to update this developing story.
