Eastwood Shopping Plaza break ins rattle employees, customers

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — Store Owners at the Eastwood Shopping Plaza in Crestwood want more security because of the number of break ins they’ve seen in less than a year.

Sally’s Beauty Supply, the Hacienda Mexican Grill and a few other stores in the Eastwood Plaza said they have been broken into. The Vape Loft said they almost lost half of their inventory to a burglary when someone smashed their front window.

“We got broken into. They took out that window to the left, surprisingly they left the TV’s,” said Vape Loft employee, Michael Bower.

The owner of the vape loft said in his contract, security is suppose to be surveillance the area 24/7, but that’s not always the case.

“That company leaves after the last establishment closes which is around one,” said shop owner, David Iradji.

Security personnel with Sanguard Security said someone is always out patrolling the plaza.

“Its been pretty safe out here as far as what I can see,” said Sanguard Security employee, Johnny Effinger.

WIAT called the corporate office for further comment because some shop owners disagree with that statement, bu they have yet to respond.

“Until we say something to the landlord then they will actually maybe show up for 2 or 3 days and then they are off again. We hardly ever see them,” said Bower.

Vape Loft put bars up at the establishment’s windows because of the crime. Customers who frequent the plaza said the fear really sets in at night.

“Its was probably around 9 or 10. My husband works out here and he is here every single day, 40-60 hours a week depending and he still will not let me stay in the car by myself day or night,” said one customer.

The landlord switched security companies to Sanguard a few months ago specifically to cut down on those break ins.
